As teachers, we understand the impact of a well-decorated classroom on student engagement and motivation. However, decorating your classroom can be a tricky task with various things to keep in mind. In this blog post, we will explore easy tips to help you decorate your classroom while ensuring a comfortable environment for all students.

Get the Logistics:
Before heading to Amazon or Lakeshore Learning Store, familiarize yourself with your school or district's guidelines regarding classroom decorations. Determine if there are specific requirements such as a data wall, anchor charts, space student work, or seasonal changes to bulletin boards. Additionally, be mindful of overstimulation, particularly if you work with a specific demographic or students with special needs. A cluttered and overly stimulating environment can hinder focus and learning. Understanding these logistics will help you plan your decorations more effectively.
What Goes Up, Must Come Down:
I’m a 4’10” 30-year-old female. I learned very quickly at the start of my career that whatever you put up at the beginning of the school year will need to come down at the end. You also need to consider that you will be covering up materials when state testing comes around. If you find yourself struggling to put up or take down things due to your height or other issues, consider putting up only what you can physically take down. If you absolutely MUST have something on a higher surface, collaborate with a taller colleague or your school janitors. You can also enlist the help of your students. Involving them in the process can be a fun activity and foster a sense of community in the classroom.
Opt for Neutral Bulletin Board Borders And Use The Free Paper:
Bulletin boards are a valuable tool for displaying student work, posting anchor charts, and sharing important information. To maintain a cohesive look and save yourself the hassle of constantly changing borders, consider investing in neutral bulletin board borders. These versatile options can be reused for different themes and seasons, saving you time and money. As crazy as it sounds, some school districts may have specific policies regarding the types of materials you can use for classroom decorations. For instance, certain districts don’t allow the amazing "Better Than Paper" due to “fire code” restrictions. If your school provides bulletin board paper, pair it with your neutral borders to keep things easy and cheap for you!
Decorating your classroom is an opportunity to create an inspiring and engaging environment for your students. By keeping in mind the logistics, understanding your audience, and adhering to school/district requirements, you can strike a balance between creativity and compliance. Remember, a well-decorated classroom can contribute to a positive learning experience, but it should never compromise the comfort and focus of your students or yourself. Happy decorating!
