Bringing Social Studies and Language Arts Together for Deeper Understanding

Updated: Apr 18, 2023

POV: You just got out of another meeting about test scores and you are tasked with implementing more language arts skills in your social studies classes. This is NOT as daunting as you imagine it to be. Think about it - if you already have students reading texts and answering questions, you are a step in the right direction. If students are conducting research or analyzing a variety of sources, you're basically there! As social studies teachers, we know the importance of understanding the world around us and the people and events that shape it. One way to enhance student learning and understanding in social studies is by making connections to other subjects, such as language arts. Here are a few ideas for incorporating language arts into your social studies lessons:

  1. Reading and analyzing primary sources: Have students read and analyze primary sources, such as letters, diary entries, and newspaper articles, to gain a deeper understanding of historical events and people. This can also help students improve their reading comprehension and critical thinking skills. Take a look at my DBQ Skills and Practice activities - each has interactive features to dive deep into both primary and secondary sources. They also use Pear Deck to scaffold sources and differentiate learning!

  2. Debating historical issues: Have students form small groups and research different sides of a historical or current issue. Then, have them hold a class debate to practice their public speaking and argumentation skills. Be sure to set some ground rules to avoid total chaos. This First Continental Congress Simulation is just one of my many lessons that engage students in healthy debate in a real historic event!

  3. Creating a multimedia project: Have students create a multimedia project about a topic from social studies using tools such as Google Apps for Education, Prezi, or StoryBoardThat. This bundle of ideas will help you to not limit students to creating slides and presenting - get creative with Google Sites and other website-building tools! This can help them practice their technology skills while also presenting information in a visually appealing way. This also encourages the writing and proofreading skills necessary to publish information.

By making connections between social studies and language arts, you can help your students improve their skills in both subjects while also deepening their understanding of the world around them.
